Schisandra is a berry-bearing vine used in traditional herbal medicine as an adaptogen, a plant thought to help the body handle stress and to protect liver cells. People mostly look at it for support while recovering from acute viral hepatitis, and the evidence for that use is limited. Other research is small: one study of 71 people found nitric oxide went up, while cortisol results were mixed.
