Aniracetam is a lab-made compound from the racetam family that is thought to influence glutamate signaling, a chemical system involved in learning and memory. In people with mild dementia, research found thinking scores held steady over 6 to 12 months, did better than cholinesterase inhibitor drugs at 6 months, and mood and daily functioning improved at 3 months. Still, the evidence is limited, drawn from about 276 people, with effects small to moderate.
