Asafoetida
Asafoetida is an oleo-gum-resin from Ferula species containing sesquiterpene coumarins (farnesiferols, galbanic acid), organosulfur compounds, and ferulic acid. A double-blind RCT (n=43) found 250mg twice daily for 30 days significantly improved functional dyspepsia symptoms in 81% of patients vs placebo (p<0.01). For IBS, a Cochrane review found very low quality evidence from 2 trials (n=129). An RCT found Ferula capsules comparable to metronidazole for Trichomonas vaginalis (n=70). A small PCOS trial (n=30) compared 1g/day to oral contraceptives. Mechanistically, it relaxes intestinal smooth muscle and inhibits gas formation. Preclinical data shows antihypertensive, anticonvulsant (effective in kindling models), and neuroprotective effects, but robust human evidence beyond digestive conditions is lacking.
