Pyritinol
Pyritinol is two vitamin B6 molecules linked by disulfide bridge. Used in Europe (Encephabol) for dementia and cognitive decline in elderly. NOT vitamin B6 - different pharmacology, crosses BBB better. Marketed as nootropic but NO studies in healthy young adults. Some evidence in elderly cognitive impairment and rheumatoid arthritis (anti-inflammatory). NOTABLE SIDE EFFECTS: hepatotoxicity, cholestatic hepatitis, skin reactions. The risk-benefit ratio is questionable for nootropic use given side effect profile.

Salidrosides
2 shared conditions · 11 outcomes
Salidroside is a glucoside compound and one of the main bioactive constituents of Rhodiola rosea. Often standardized in Rhodiola extracts (typically 1-3%). Has neuroprotective and adaptogenic properties. Research shows anti-fatigue, anti-stress, and potential anti-depressant effects. Mechanism involves HPA axis modulation, AMPK activation, and antioxidant effects. Most clinical evidence is for the whole Rhodiola rosea extract rather than isolated salidroside. May be more effective as part of whole plant extract than in isolation.
Loquat
2 shared conditions · 7 outcomes
Eriobotrya japonica (Loquat) is a fruit-bearing tree whose leaves have been used in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) for cough, sputum, and respiratory conditions. Rich in triterpenoids, particularly ursolic acid and related compounds. The fruit is consumed as food; the leaves and seeds are used medicinally. NO GRADED OUTCOMES - research is mostly preclinical. May have anti-inflammatory, antitussive (cough-suppressing), and glucose-regulating effects. The seeds have been added to alcoholic tonics for longevity. Safe as a fruit; medicinal leaf preparations have traditional use but limited modern research.
Zeaxanthin
1 shared condition · 7 outcomes
Zeaxanthin is one of three macular carotenoids (with lutein and meso-zeaxanthin) that accumulate in the macula and protect against blue light and oxidative damage. AREDS2 formula includes 2mg zeaxanthin + 10mg lutein. Together they reduce AMD progression risk. Zeaxanthin is more concentrated in central macula than lutein. Found in orange peppers, corn, egg yolks. Generally used with lutein, not alone.
Whole Coffee Fruit Extract
1 shared condition · 3 outcomes
Whole Coffee Fruit Extract (NeuroFactor brand) is marketed for increasing BDNF (brain-derived neurotrophic factor) levels. Made from the coffee cherry (fruit around the bean), NOT coffee beans. Contains polyphenols including chlorogenic acid. Little to no caffeine. One small study showed 143% BDNF increase with 100mg. Limited human evidence beyond BDNF marker. Claims exceed evidence - BDNF increase doesn't automatically translate to cognitive benefits.

Thunder god vine
1 shared condition · 7 outcomes
Thunder god vine is a Traditional Chinese Medicine herb with PROVEN efficacy for rheumatoid arthritis but DANGEROUS toxicity. Has a VERY LOW therapeutic index (narrow margin between effective and toxic doses). Can cause severe adverse effects including infertility, immunosuppression, and death. NOT RECOMMENDED for self-supplementation. Used only under strict medical supervision in some countries. The active compounds (triptolide, celastrol) are potent but toxic.
Terminalia Chebula
1 shared condition · 12 outcomes
Terminalia chebula (Haritaki) is one of the three fruits in Triphala, an important Ayurvedic formula. Considered 'king of medicines' in Tibet. Contains tannins and antioxidants. Traditional uses include digestive issues, oral health, and as a general 'rejuvenative.' NO GRADED OUTCOMES - human research is very limited. Preclinical research shows antimicrobial, antioxidant, and anti-diabetic potential. Primarily available as part of Triphala rather than alone.
